Property description

DESCRIPTION:

Sitting on the banks of the River Thames, within walking distance of Wallingford town, Bridge House is a Grade II Listed mansion built in the late C18th. Originally home to Charles Morrell of the famous Oxford brewers, the property has since been divided into four apartments, with number 1 located on the ground floor with original large sash windows offering spectacular views across the river and to the water meadows and hills beyond. The property has access to approximately 1 acre of shared landscaped gardens with 160ft of river frontage. This unique and individual property offers a grand sitting room, kitchen, subterranean dining room, main bedroom with en-suite, second bedroom with WC and garage. Available with no onward chain. EPC Rating D.

LOCAL INFORMATION:

Wallingford was a walled Saxon Town on the Thames, and the remains of the town walls can still be seen today. William the Conqueror built Wallingford Castle, which was used as a royal residence until the time of the Black Death. The remains of the Castle can be seen from the Castle Gardens. Today Wallingford is a thriving Market Town; the centre is a major conservation area with examples of churches and architecture dating back to the 14th Century. The landscape from the River Thames is officially designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Being a Town, Wallingford offers every means of amenity one would expect. The narrow streets with their variety of small shops, pubs and restaurants, the antique shops in the Lamb Arcade, and the parks, commons and gardens make it a very pleasant town. Wallingford is within easy reach of both the M40 and the M4, and is conveniently located within access of Henley, Reading, & Oxford.

ACCOMMODATION:

The original oversized front door leads into a grand communal entrance hall. The front door to the apartment can be found to the right, opening to an entrance hall with checkerboard tiling. The stunning reception room has approximately 12ft high ceilings with original coving and ceiling medallion, with a nearly full height sash window with wooden shutters offering a spectacular view over the grounds and directly onto the River Thames. There are also built in bookcases and a gas fire with granite surround. The kitchen is front aspect, again with a sash window with wooden shutters, fitted with a matching range of wall and base units with a breakfast bar, granite worktop, integral appliances including double ovens, 5 ring gas hob and microwave and freestanding appliances including fridge/freezer and dishwasher. A turning staircase leads down to a subterranean dining room, with brick barrel vaulted ceiling. This room also provides access to the communal cellar, with a private utility cupboard with space for both washing machine and tumble dryer.

A half flight of stairs leads down to the main bedroom, with double sash windows, built-in wardrobe and en-suite fitted with a bath with shower over and full tiling. There is a further bedroom with a full range of wooden wardrobes and an en-suite WC with a saniflo toilet.

OUTSIDE SPACE:

The gated entrance to Bridge House is approached from Thames Street into the large circular driveway with a central planted island. The drive continues to the garage block, with each property benefitting from a single garage, along with allocated parking.

The gardens of Bridge House are a delight and are shared by the owners of the house with direct river frontage. There is a large area of lawn which gently slopes down to the River Thames. There is over 160ft river frontage and the gardens amount to about an acre.
