Wantage is a market town and civil parish in the Vale of the White Horse, Oxfordshire, England. The town is on Letcombe Brook, about 8 miles south-west of Abingdon and a similar distance west of Didcot. King Alfred the Great was born at the royal palace there in the 9th century.
Wantage is at the crossing of the B4507 Valley Road, the A417 road between Reading and Cirencester and the A338 road between Hungerford and junction 14 of the M4 motorway and Oxford. Regular bus services link Wantage with Oxford, Didcot, Abingdon and Faringdon.
In the Wantage, Grove and District area there are 10 very good Primary Schools and in Denchworth Road Wantage a very good Special Educational needs school. King Alfred Academy School on 3 sites around Wantage, plus Six Form. There are also a number of Nursery’s, Pre School and Day Care Centres.
Doctor’s Surgery’s are at the Health Centre, Mably Way, Wantage and Grove Medical Centre, 3 Vale Avenue, Grove along with a number of Dentist Surgery’s and Opticians to be found in the area.
There are many churches in the area covering Anglican, Roman Catholic, Methodist, Baptist, and Community Church.
Facilities are good in terms of shopping, as well as a Leisure Centre, Gyms, Public Houses and Cinema. A market is held every Wednesday and Saturday.
Wantage Town also has a Non-League football club Wantage Town F.C. who play at Alfredian Park.
